Continuous Compliance Monitoring for AWS — Why Annual Audits Aren't Enough
Your annual security audit came back clean in December. In January, a developer opened port 22 to the internet on a staging security group to debug a deployment issue. How infrastructure actually changes
Modern AWS environments aren't static. On any given week, your team might:
- Launch new EC2 instances or containers
- Create or modify security groups

- Change VPC routing or subnet configurations

Developers create resources under time pressure. Some follow the standards, some don't. Nobody is checking systematically. Month 7-10: The original audit findings are ancient history. New team members who weren't around for the audit don't know the standards. Configuration drift accelerates. Month 11-12: Pre-audit panic. Someone is assigned to "get things audit-ready." They spend weeks doing the same manual checks the auditor will do, finding and fixing months of drift. The actual audit goes fine — because you just cleaned everything up.This cycle wastes engineering time, creates risk during the unmonitored months, and gives leadership a false sense of security. Passing an annual audit doesn't mean you were compliant for the other 364 days.
The cost of late detection
Finding a misconfiguration the week it happens is cheap. The developer who created it remembers why, knows the context, and can fix it in minutes.
Finding that same misconfiguration eight months later is expensive. The developer may have left the company. Nobody remembers what the resource is for. The fix requires investigation, testing, and possibly data migration. If customer data was exposed, you may have legal notification obligations with tight deadlines.
Compliance frameworks increasingly recognise this. SOC2 Type II, for example, evaluates controls over a period of time — not at a single point. Auditors want to see that your controls were operational in March, June, and September, not just in December when they visited.
